For the Holidays, Four New Classes!

With four new classes on the schedule, House of Yoga’s offerings are as diverse as your reasons to celebrate this winter. There’s something for everyone–so start the new year off right with yoga!

Read on to find out more about our new classes: Vinyasa Flow, Power Vinyasa, Yoga Flow and Kripalu! Or, click here to meet our instructors.

Vinyasa Yoga Flow: What does “athlete” mean to you? This class is a warming vinyasa flow designed to relieve joints, build strength, and help you find flexibility on your mat that can be applied to all of your off-the-mat movements. Whether you’re a desk jockey, weekend warrior, service industry worker, or a full-time professional athlete, there is something for everybody to gain from this class. We will practice and honor the traditional asanas with the additions of some out-of-the-box choreography–or a little lagniappe, if you will.

Power Vinyasa Yoga: This power vinyasa class is an accessible, challenging, and flowing style of yoga. Postures are linked with the breath for a dynamic flowing sequence of movement. Classes are playful and energetic, and suitable for everyone. There are many modifications and variations that serve the needs of all experience levels. Held in a warm room, this class will provide a great full-body workout, improving flexibility, balance, strength, concentration, detoxification and breathing capacity! Get ready to move, sweat, and let go of daily stresses through this moving meditation to unlock your potential within!

Kripalu Yoga: Meditation in motion is the jewel of Kripalu yoga: when the body surrenders to the life force within the breath and moves spontaneously to the call of deep inner awareness. Kripalu means “compassion” in Sanskrit, and in terms of the practice, it is a compassionate way to look at the body to allow the true nature of the self to come through. New Orleans House of Yoga offers a heated, vigorous Kripalu yoga class that allows you to define your edge, with modifications offered to provide maximum benefits for any individual.

Hot Yoga Flow:  Designed for more advanced yogis who want to be challenged and are willing to sweat. Hot yoga flow is a fast-moving class, connecting movement with breath for a dance-like approach. This class will leave you feeling warm, loose, rejuvenated and relaxed!

We can’t wait to see you in class soon!

Kripalu Yoga Now at New Orleans House of Yoga!

New Orleans House of Yoga, located Uptown at 725 Joseph St, Suite A, above Slice Pizzeria, is excited to announce the addition of a new class to its schedule. House of Yoga now offers a Kripalu-style yoga class three times a week: at noon on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

Established by Amrit Desai, a disciple of India’s Swami Kripalvananda, Kripalu is a form of Hatha yoga that focuses on the flow of breath, or prana, to establish inner calm. Kripalu means “compassion” in Sanskrit, and the practice encourages a compassionate, holistic approach to well-being.

Kripalu classes incorporate three stages. The first stage centers around using “press-point technology” to align the physical body, while the second stage draws awareness inward using breathing techniques, with eyes closed. In the last stage of Kripalu practice, each pose is held in order to cultivate a flow of energy within the body, connecting physical and emotional awareness. This last stage is known as “meditation in motion,” and creates a feeling of tranquility that lasts beyond the end of class.

New Orleans House of Yoga’s Kripalu classes are led by registered yoga teacher Jess Maxwell, who completed her training at the Kripalu Yoga Institute. Classes take place in House of Yoga’s unique, lovely yoga jungle, with plants throughout the studio increasing oxygen output and carbon dioxide uptake.

Getting Started with Hot Yoga

Hot yoga can seem frightening or intimidating at first. After all, you’re already exercising–why suffer more because the room is heated? The heat, especially at traditional temperatures (around 107 degrees Fahrenheit) can lend itself to panic or anxiety.

But practicing in a heated room offers many benefits that may not be immediately apparent. Muscles and joints relax and stretch more at higher temperatures; the heart enjoys a vigorous workout, and the lungs open up to facilitate deeper breathing than ever before. Coming to terms with the heat’s emotional effects is sometimes the most difficult for practitioners of hot yoga. It’s tempting to tell yourself that you can’t or won’t “do it”: “it” being the successful completion of a difficult pose or series. However, just by opening your mind to the idea that you can, in fact, “do it”–and that if you are trying a pose to the best of your abilities, you are getting all of its benefits–can have a tremendous impact on your yoga practice.
This positive attitude and focus on what is possible instead of what isn’t forms the foundation of a healthy, productive practice. So don’t sweat the heat! See you in class soon.
